My Grandpa John started the original Studt Construction as a home builder in south central South Dakota. He and his crew, often including my Grandma Della and my Uncle Tim, did everything themselves from framing to electrical to flooring. Growing up watching them and helping out when I was able is probably why I was so drawn to this work. I think I took every shop class I could in Junior High and High School.
While going to college I worked as a craftsman's apprentice for a company in Letcher, SD that restores and reproduces horse drawn wagons and stagecoaches. In the summers I also worked on a residential construction crew back home in Custer. Both of these positions along with an earlier maintenance and light construction job at a local campground helped plant the seed.
In 1993 I graduated from Mitchell Tech with a degree in Architectural Drafting and Building Construction. After graduation I got a job with a large lumberyard but found myself always wanting to do the projects for the customers I was selling materials to.
So in 1994 when I started this construction company, it only seemed fitting to call it Studt Construction. Grandpa stayed active doing small jobs and repairs into his 80's so I hope I can follow in his footsteps there as well.
